My Review:
Winter Sonata starts off as a story about a new boy in school, Kang Jun Sang and a girl, Jung Yu-jin, who meet school. They start to become friends but Yu-jin’s best friend, Kim Sang-Hyuk, doesn’t like Jun Sang. Sang-Hyuk tries hard to get between them but their love is made of something stronger than he can overcome. At the same time Sang-Hyuk and Yu-jin’s other friend Oh Che-lin also wants to break them up, since she also likes Jun Sang and wants him to go out with her. Unfortunately for Che-lin he doesn’t like her at all. Yu-jin and Jun Sang get closer and then as quickly as he entered her life he disappears.
Years later Sang-Hyuk, Yu-jin and two of their other close friends have a party to celebrate Sang-Hyuk and Yu-jin’s engagement. But Yu-jin can’t forget her first love Jun Sang and even as she is about to marry someone else, all she can do is think of him. Che-lin then shows up at the party with her boyfriend, who just happens to look alot like Jun Sang. Could this be fate bringing true soul mates back together?
The story that is told in this drama is amazing, heart wrenching, tear jerking and if you remember your first true love some of the scenes may strike a cord. If you start watching Korean Dramas regularly you will see most of the “Love Story” variety share some common themes. Someone may go to the hospital because they are sick or have been in an accident. There may be two people in love but their relationship just seems out of reach no matter what they do. Sometimes there is a jealous rival that creates a love triangle full of twist and turns that leave you either angry or confused as to which is the best choice. Winter Sonata has all of these and many more that weave a create story that will really keep your attention to the end.
Another aspect of Winter Sonata that really got me interested in Korean Drama was their acting ability. They can convey emotions so throughly and sometimes without a word. You feel everything they feel, happy when they are happy and sad when they are sad and sometimes (most of the time) you cry with them. You really find your self caring about the characters and sometimes you can see what is about to happen and you want to reach out to them and stop them before they lose everything. This is something I found really drew me in and made me enjoy watching the show.
The scenery and soundtrack also greatly enhance the show. The settings are quite lovely although, most things would look beautiful and wondrous covered in sparkling snow. There are several beautiful places where they filmed this drama, such as Namiseom Island, Chuncheon and Yongpyong Resort. The soundtrack has a lot of beautiful piano music and the words to the songs are beautiful(it is very easy to find the translations of the main songs). The music also really enhances whatever mood is being portrayed, sometimes when I hear the music I can remember the scenes that had a great impact on me.
